Edwin VanCleef and Vanessa VanCleef
Edwin VanCleef, the Classic Rogue legendary, you might be surprised to know, was one of the greatest human engineers in Azeroth history.
Edwin was a master stonemason and, after the destruction of Stormwind, (the main human capital of the Alliance where King Varian Wrynn and Prince Anduin live,) by the orcs, in the first war, he was called upon to help rebuild. Such was his genius that he was able to rebuild the entire city in 10 years.
It was at this point that things took a horrible turn. The House of Nobles refused to pay the workers. Some of the more senior workers like Edwin were offered government jobs if they'd just keep quiet and not cause trouble, but he refused to betray his men and take a payout. Before he left Stormwind, Edwin spit on the ground inside the rebuilt castle and vowed he’d make them pay, one way or another (now Edwin didn't realize this, but one of the Nobles that was manipulating this turn of events was Lady Katrana Prestor, who is later revealed to be Onyxia in disguise, and she did it on purpose to destabilize Stormwind).
So Edwin goes out and urges the workers to riot and in this riot a rock is thrown that kills Varian Wrynn's wife, Anduins mother, Tiffin Wrynn.
As a result all of the workers are cast out of Stormwind, left in the mud outside the city gates that they rebuilt. This is when Edwin VanCleef forms the Defias Brotherhood. He takes the artisans and tinkers and engineers and teaches them the tricks he has learned from the cities' thieves, and they start robbing travellers. They use their expertise as craftsmen to make mechanical devices and weapons, and pretty soon escalate to attacking farmsteads outside Stormwind that provide the capital with food, as well as travelling merchants on their way to the city. As Edwin gathered more money, he hired more mercenaries. Even those of his men that were caught and put in prison, staged a rebellion from inside the stockade.
In World of Warcraft you as a player are called upon, by the king, to stop the Defias Brotherhood, and go into the Deadmines where they have been building a huge warship with which to attack Stormwind. You kill Edwin and for a while everyone believes that the Defias Brotherhood is over. However, Edwin has a daughter, Vanessa VanCleef, who witnessed her father's death and becomes the new leader of the Defias Brotherhood in his stead.(spoilers, you end up killing her too.)
This whole quest line is notorious in WoW for being very controversial. Many players, after learning the truth behind the expulsion of the stonemasons from Stormwind, especially after they unmask Onyxia and her plot, sympathize with the Defias and want another option to deal with them. Like pay them what they are owed. They gave 10 years of their lives to rebuild the Capital city of the Alliance. And it is beautiful. And because Varian was too busy to look in to the story behind the riots, and ask why the workers were so disgruntled, there was a misunderstanding that cost many lives, including that of his wife.
Many hardcore RP'ers refuse to complete the storyline in protest of having no other option but to Kill Edwin VanCleef. And then his daughter.
Vanessa, as a child, is watching in the shadows as the player kills her father. She is found a little time later by the Saldeans; "in the dead of night, a little girl walked right into our farmhouse and collapsed on the floor. Nobody had a clue as to her identity. The poor thing had no recollection of who she was or where she came from - truly a lost soul."
They name her Hope, and she grows up with a dual identity; sweet orphan, and leader of the Defias Brotherhood. She even goes so far as to arrange for the murder of the only two people who knew her as a baby, and might therefore recognize her.
This time the people who are drawn to the Defias banner are the masses of homeless people, displaced after the battles in Northrend and then the Cataclysm. Vanessa plants propaganda, speaking out against King Varian, and stages a riot, eventually unmasking herself and revealing the new Brotherhood as she burns Sentinel Hill to the ground.
"Lies, greed, and deception—these are the things that my father stood against. For years, he worked tirelessly, helping to rebuild your devastated city, and what thanks did he or anyone else get for it? Nothing. What choice did they have but to turn on those who the crown favored to get payment, one way or another? Fate, it would seem, has led me down this path. Even with the murder of my father, your foolish attempts to destroy the Defias have been in vain. I am, now more than ever, my father’s daughter, and the Defias Brotherhood will rise once more..."
In Legion we are surprised, and in my case delighted, to discover that Vanessa faked her death in the Deadmines, (the hideout of the Brotherhood where her father was killed and we face her in battle as well). She is given the choice, to join you as an agent/ally or die. She chooses to join the Uncrowned, a secret organization of rogues, and fights on the side of the player.
So perhaps some justice is had after all.
